This series came about following on from the 10×10 text grid of iwaslookin. Having written a text in this style, it seemed necessary to take the white space v black space idea and apply it to a more abstract form. Here a grid is held together by a mesh of lines to become connected. The line drawing was then used as a structure for further drawing within the white space between the lines. A second drawing was then made without the original line structure and finally these white space circumnavigations were blacked in. A little artistic licence has been applied when selecting what is or is not space. That is, I broke my own rules in order to achieve an outcome I was happy with. Nothing unusual there, as the rules are (usually) only ever used as a starting point. The installation components have been deconstructed and folded as-if maps for storage in the real-world archive.

A new alphabet drawn using Edding 33 marker pen ink on acid free layout paper. This wedge tipped marker pen allowed for a much thicker line. As with IWASLOOKIN, I like the hints of alphabet in the outlined white space and blacked in versions. This time, each drawing fills a single A2 sheet of layout paper, is lit using a projected rectangle of white light and is then processed via the equalisation filter in The GIMP. The alphabet design was driven by a desire to make each letter fill it’s allocated square and use only a limited set of vertical, horizontal and diagonal marks. In this instance, all the marks were made using a straight edge.

The deconstructed components have been folded as-if maps and stored in the real-world archive.

This series started with the idea to write some text to a 10 x 10 grid. The rules were the text should make sense, but the spaces and punctuation would be removed. The text was then used as a structure for further drawing within the white space between letters. A second drawing was then made without the original text and finally these white space circumnavigations were blacked in. I find the contrasts between the different stages interesting and I hope you do too!

A reordered Gray code in block form. This is cyclic in both the vertical and horizontal planes. It will also tile and stay true to these principles.

Three squares of symbols, a connection plan and alternative lighting. I could have stopped there, but I didn’t. Many more circles and squares added to complete these alternate outcomes.
